My research focuses on earthquake sources and their consequences. My approach is to create new observational tools that help validate physical models. I use strong ground motion recordings to unravel the mechanisms that control the physics of earthquake ruptures. I use weak ground motions to decipher the effects of complex geological structure on seismic wave propagation. My work on ground motion prediction focuses on urban areas that sit atop sedimentary basins and that will be subject to seismic amplification during next earthquakes. Natural laboratories are Tokyo, Los Angeles, Seattle, Jakarta. Because environmental factors (ground water, soil moisture, snow load) impact the Earth subsurface, my next research direction will explore the non-stationary assessment of seismic shaking in scenario earthquakes.
