Today, Congress certified the results of the 2024 election. This marks the completion of an election cycle that faced many challenges, including foreign interference and threats of violence. Yet despite all of this, we can take pride that our elections were executed safely, efficiently, and effectively – thanks in large part to the tremendous work of many individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting American democracy.
The Packard Foundation recognizes the successful administration of the 2024 election. Yet we also understand that our democracy remains fragile, the fault lines that divide our country remain deep, and our government’s ability to meet the public’s needs efficiently and effectively, in a rapidly changing world, remains a challenge. Until these underlying issues are addressed, ongoing threats to our democratic system will persist far beyond this one election cycle.
This moment calls for a renewed dedication to the values that bind us together as a nation, and to the critical work of ensuring that our governing institutions are capable of delivering in the modern era. Our democracy’s survival and strength hinge on our collective commitment to uphold, protect, and improve it every day. Each of us has a role to play in fostering a healthy democracy that delivers for all.
We are committed to working with our grantee partners to create a thriving, resilient democracy that protects everyone’s fundamental rights, ensures everyone has the same chance to succeed regardless of background, and encourages positive engagement across divides. We believe that proactive, long-term thinking, supported by partnerships across the political spectrum, will drive progress toward a democracy that effectively meets the needs of a politically, racially, religiously, and geographically diverse America.
